Elizabeth Cheek's paintings address both the minute and the vast. Composed of thousands of short, thin lines, they paradoxically appear at first glance to be solid fields of color. For the repetitive nature of their manufacture, they are surprisingly calm. Grand, quiet, and full of particularities, they offer a fresh take on how Nonobjective painting can come to resemble the processes of nature. Elizabeth Cheek emerged in 2000 from the Fifth Year Program of the School of Museum of Fine Arts.
