Valerie Claff's seascapes are inspired by her life-long relationship with the ocean. As a child, she spent summers sailing with her family in Woods Hole, Massachusetts. "I felt the most comfortable and relaxed at sea," says Claff , "surrounded by fog - and the beauty and mystery of what's beyond the fog."

After receiving a B.A. in 1986, Claff attended a program at the Studio Art School of the Aegean, in Samos, Greece, where she fell in love with the light and atmosphere and stayed for eight years. During her time in Greece, she began to focus on not only the physical aspects of the sea, but her responses to it as well.
