Brenda
Star first gained wide attention with large columnar works
made with or covered by cement and cement-like materials, compact
forms whose dense surfaces are rubbed with layers of pigment.
She has also made work that uses linear, lyrically convoluted
forms curving through space and cast in bronze, with patinas
of shifting color.
Her most recent pieces have employed plaster and mesh fabric to create forms
from human anatomy and, in a related series, cast polyurethane and actual deer's
feet, making a striking marriage of materials. Star's concerns have consistently
centered around how we read verbal and visual language, and how these understandings
do and don't cross cultures and time.
Star's sculptures have been exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Art in
Boston, the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in Lincoln, Massachusetts, and
the Newport Art Museum in Rhode Island.
