George Nick: joo joo eye-ball
On View: November 13 – December 19, 2015
Reception: Friday, November 13, 6 – 8pm
Brownstone facades of the Back Bay, rocks and surf of the north shore, dizzying and reflective studio still lifes, and rusting agrarian equipment make up the subject matter of the latest slice of Nick fascination. Nearly gone are the beautified suburban houses and the sun dappled interiors.
The subject matter of the new paintings is idiosyncratic and sentimental.
Pulcinella 23 Sept 2015 depicts three inflatable beach toys nestled together atop folds of yellow fabric. The toys, given to Nick by a fellow painter, are at once translucent, reflective, and breathtakingly bright. The interior glow of the blue inflatable against the yellow fabric appears as a ghastly green, a color against which the pink inner tube appears to revolt.
