Judy Kensley McKie

On View: November 8 – December 14, 2019
Reception: Friday, November 8, 6 – 8pm

McKie blurs the line between utilitarian furniture and sculpture and successfully blends the two as she creates, in effect, furniture as art. Demonstrating her comfort and skill in several mediums, the show at Gallery NAGA is comprised of large and impressive works including tables, chests, vases, wall hung mirrors and more.  Widely recognized as a pivotal figure in her field, Judy Kensley McKie has created a body of work that feels both familiar and fresh.

Judy Kensley McKie is recognized as a premiere figure in the American studio furniture movement.

Her furniture in carved and painted wood and in cast bronze, marble, stone, and resin occupies a singular position in the field. The work is infused with a lively awareness of modernist and contemporary art and also with the design aesthetic of indigenous cultures throughout the world. Playfulness and power are summoned by her incorporation of sculptural, totemic animal forms.
