Lucy Beecher Nelson: Shared Table

I am drawn to the beauty and obsolescence of my family’s antique china, much of which now sits packed away in boxes in my basement. Lovingly collected by generations of women before me, each pattern was chosen to reflect their individual tastes and the lives they aspired to create as they entered adulthood…The rituals surrounding formal meals and the use of fine china have largely been abandoned, and yet I cannot bring myself to part with these objects. They exist in a space between sentiment and utility, simultaneously treasured and impractical. Through them, I am interested in exploring the ways we preserve, inherit, question, and carry forward the objects and expectations that shape our understanding of family, womanhood, and home.

Lucy Beecher Nelson earned her MFA from Tufts University/School of the Museum of Fine Arts and BFA from Denison University. In her final year of graduate school, she was a finalist for the Joan Mitchell Foundation and Dedalus Foundation. She has shown her paintings across the US, including Room 68, NAGA Gallery, Bowery Gallery, Frosch & Co, Cove Street Art Gallery, Rocky Neck Artist Colony, Cotuit Center for the Arts, and GASP Gallery. In 2017, her work was shortlisted for the Young Masters Art Prize in London. She has taught painting and drawing for the past 19 years at private schools in Arizona and Massachusetts. She currently lives and works in Falmouth, MA, with her husband and two daughters.
