Anthotype Workshop with Mary Kocol
The Anthotype (Greek word meaning Flower Print) is a fun & eco-friendly process from the Victorian era. Related to the better-known cyanotype process, same inventor, but like a bouquet of flowers, it's ephemeral! The process appeals to kids, adults, gardeners, plant enthusiasts, and artists: printmakers, alternative-photo people, artists who work with inks, watercolors, and color in general. Because anthotypes require a long exposure in the sun (days to weeks!) Participants will leave with a how-to-anthotype handout, for further exploration. They will also learn a simple eco-printing method - a Japanese technique called Tataki-zomé, which can be completed on-site.

Art installation by Phaan Howng
in the Wild Knoll Foundation Garden, curated by Carly Glovinski '21. Baltimore-based artist Phaan Howng creates work that imagines vibrant, post-apocalyptic landscapes where plants (re)take center stage. Her work explores the complex entanglements between nature and human industry.

Plant Sale with Carly Glovinski '21
Purchase divisions from the Wild Knoll Foundation Garden.

Foraged Feast by Rachel Alexandrou
Inspired by Surf Point’s coastal and forested landscape, Rachel will use foraged ingredients to create a unique menu of hors d'oeuvres. The feast promotes land stewardship and encourages a strong relationships with local flora through food.

Coppa Magica Gelato
Gelato will be available for purchase from the delicious local Coppa Magica gelato truck!

Community Days are open and free to the public; please register for address and directions. For those who are able, we invite you to make a contribution to support our public programs

THICKET Curated by Kirstin Lamb

THICKET Curated by Kirstin Lamb

event description

“Many artists are drawn to middle spaces, collective in-betweens to gather. Thicket here is a middle space, not a clearing or a dense cover. This group of artists reflects an impulse toward greenery and lushness tempered by scale. Many works show a density but with a welcome uncertainty.

There is a sense that the thicket is both compellingly lush and dangerous and also small and weedy. Some works showcase the threatening precariousness of edge spaces, others detail the invasive species that constitute a great many thicket-spaces.

Each artist chosen for this investigation reveals a corner of the brush, from bright greenery to scrubby brown and orange dead leaves below. There is a clean well-lit space rendered in textile and a squishy lush dark space in oil. Some works present abstractions of the idea of thicket, from the energy of the twittering birds to the strangeness of the combination of life growing at the edges of farmland and human civilization. I invite you into each artist's world, many of them jewel box depictions of space outdoors. Most importantly, this is a gathering space.”  –Kirstin Lamb, curator

Great Presenters: Richard Raiselis

Event Description

Join Richard Raiselis for a free event hosted by the Wayland Public Library.

Natural Witness: A Painter’s Pledge to See the World With His Own Two Eyes

Richard Raiselis paints in all seasons directly from life outdoors, or from a window high above the city.  In a moment when we effortlessly record what we see with iphones, why would a visual artist reject the comforts of a warm studio for the uncertainties of winter weather?  Or lug large canvases, paints, and easels to busy street corners, into buggy conservation land, or onto commuter trains to city centers?

Raiselis will address his choice to be a witness, to see the natural or constructed landscape with the immediacy of unfiltered looking.  A painting is a statement—often taking months to complete—of the visible and invisible qualities of a place and a time.

Raiselis will show his work and speak about how and why he makes it.  The artistic process can seem mysterious.  As a painter and an educator, he is skilled at making art and explaining it.

Please join us for this opportunity to look, learn and ask questions that will enrich your enjoyment of art.
Richard Raiselis is Associate Professor of Art at Boston University.  He is a 2022-2023 Massachusetts Cultural Council Fellow in Painting, and is represented in New England by Gallery NAGA, Boston, where he had his seventh solo exhibition in 2022.

Hybrid event. Attend in person or via Zoom.
