Mary Kocol Featured on GBH ‘Community Canvas’ Digitial Mural

August 20, 2025

Embedded in the exterior wall of GBH Studios is a Boston landmark: a 30 feet by 45 feet Digital Mural overlooking the Mass Turnpike. Designed to inform our community and brighten the ride for commuters, the Mural’s images inspire curiosity and reflect the content and values of public media. At night, it reverts to a tranquil image of the evening sky.

Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.

Today’s mural by Mary Kocol is from The Ice Gardens series, which intersects gardening, photography, and ice candles.

“The blossoms are collected from gardens of friends, family, and my own, then frozen into ice plates and photographed in sunlight to reveal fanciful and ephemeral constructions,” Kocol says. “Blooms and ice are temporary. The photograph becomes the permanent art object – the record that they once briefly existed.”

Kocol is a fine art and editorial photographer based in Boston. She is a recipient of the Guggenheim Fellowship and Massachusetts Local Cultural Council grants.
